ToK: Transcription and Gene Expression

The nature versus nurture debate concerning the relative importance of an

individual’s innate qualities versus those acquired through experiences is

still under discussion.

Is it important for science to attempt to answer this question? If so, how?

  1. Scientists should answer this question as it will help us know more about an individuals innate qualities. They are able to research this question by following the twins around and seeing what lifestyle choices they are making and knowing about the environment they are in. By knowing their choices and their environments, we will be able to know what they did differently in order for them to become different as they got older. However, by scientists watching their every move, they are invading the twins privacy. Therefore, they should only atteempt to answer this question if the twins are okay with scientists constantly watching them.

  2. The “nature vs nurture debate”, a phrase popularised by the mathematician Francis Galton, is a controversial topic dating back to the medieval times. It is a scientific and philosophical debate that revolves around the theme of innate qualities versus the acquisition or variation of certain characteristics as a person matures and lives in a different environment. This controversial debate is based on the question: “Do heredity and genetics influence our characteristics or is the environment a factor that influences our personality?”

Nature is a term relating to nativism and innate which suggests that human’s qualities are pre-determined by biological activities (the expression of specific genes). On the other hand, nurture emphasises the idea that personal experiences influence a human’s traits.

This is a very important debate for scientists as it helps identify all the factors influencing a person’s characteristics: is it gene expression or experiences? Once the answer is known, scientists then have the ability to investigate new methods of changing human’s personalities. For instance, the results of this debate will help identify how nature and nurture impact mental health.

However, in conclusion, biological and psychological data prove that human’s and animal’s characteristics are influenced by both nature (genetics) and nurture (personal experices and the environment). Many scientists agree with this conclusion as in 2014, a survey conducted among many scientists highlighted the fact that scientists believe this “debate should be retired as the dichotomy of nature and nurture has outlived it’s usefulness.”

  4. The Nature vs. Nurture debate is a topic that is and should be of importance for science. Nature and Nurture are essentially a huge part of the the search for finding out why humans behave the way they do. The debate leads us towards finding out what it is that we should attribute behavior to. This question is one that needs to be answered because if a better understanding of the roots of our behavior is established then it will be easier for science to move forward in developing more research on the topic of human behavior. In order to better understand something, it is crucial that it is clear where something is originating from. The debate also helps scientist make educated guesses about what is to come in the future in relation to our medical health. It allows further research to progress. The two broad arguments could, in the future, help find the roots of disease and epidemics.
I personally, think that the the nature and nurture are intertwined within each other rather than opposed to each other. It would help science to consider the two topics as parallels and try to understand human behavior in light of both nature and nurture.
